Heilongjiang Institute of Technology (HIT) invites applications for short term instructors to teach undergraduate courses in Geography and GIS in Spring and fall 2019 (8 weeks between May 4th – July 5th, or September - November). Course Description:1.Conservation and Management of Natural Resources (Spring)This course prepares students for sustainable natural resource management by examining: (1) cutting-edge ideas and progresses in dealing with natural resources, (2) the diverse and dynamic environmental knowledge that needs to be integrated in natural resource management, and (3) usefulness and limitation of new technologies such as GIS, remote sensing, and GPS. Students will also learn how natural resource management occurs at multiple social, spatial, and temporal scales, and how uncertainty of human knowledge often makes ideas and ethics vital in natural resource management. 2. World Regional Geography (Fall) This course examines world regions taking an analytical geographic perspective. The course materials cover three types of knowledge: first, locations and facts of world places; second, analytical angles and methodologies that can be adopted to examine world regions and geographic places; third, fundamental concepts and limitations of geographical analyses of places. 3. Urban Geography (Fall)This course examines a multitude of aspects related to the urban setting as presented in a geographic framework. Topics include the interaction and impact of historical, physical, and social forces on the urban system at both the external (between cities) and internal (within cities) scales. Students should leave the class with a deeper understanding of how cities work and the problems and opportunities existing at the urban scale. 4. Environmental Applications of GIS (Fall)By taking this course students will examine contemporary ideas, approaches, and challenges of environmental modeling with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). They will accumulate experiences in environmental analysis using GIS theories and tools, involving GIS representation (e.g. conceptualization and data handling), analysis, and presentation (e.g. map and report production, etc.). The direct course objectives are for students to appreciate how the biophysical environment has been and could be modeled with the assistance of GIS, to learn how scientific research has been conducted in a GIS-based environmental modeling context, and to practice using various environmental models. Students will also develop their skills in handling GIS data, using GIS tools, and managing GIS projects.
